When the Squamish Welcome Centre first launched its Support Program for Migrant Workers, there was no existing data about this specific subsection of the community in Squamish. Census data doesn’t typically include non-permanent residents, and even local service providers didn’t have a comprehensive understanding of how many people are living and working in Squamish though the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.
So, it fell to us to find out. Notably, this report includes the first-ever estimate of the temporary foreign worker community in Squamish. While the community may be fairly small in pure numbers (1,549 people, approximately), they make up an important portion of the municipality’s population. Migrant workers are also faced with specific challenges and unique barriers. This report illustrates the basic contours of temporary labour migration to Squamish.
